The Oregon State University Douglas County Extension Service Agricultural Learning Center houses the Master Gardener Discovery Garden, Faculty Research Plots, Compost Production, and the Master Gardener program’s Nursery and Greenhouses.
Our Nursery and Greenhouses are operated by dedicated volunteers growing a wide array of annuals, perennials, vegetable starts, shrubs, and trees for sale at our annual Plant & Garden Expo.
Our nursery facilities are closed to the public.
New varieties and old favorites are grown every year with clean material donated by MG Volunteers, propagations collected in the Discovery Garden, propagating purchased nursery stock, or by starting seeds. We focus on the healthy movement of soil and plants and do not sell plants that were recently grown in the ground. We also follow phytosanitary protocols; sanitizing tools, supplies and equipment to eliminate the possibility of transferring insects or diseases.
Westside Greenhouses
The Westside Greenhouse crew starts hundreds of vegetable starts, herbs, flowers, and more from seed every year. They also produce many decorative bedding plants. The Westside Greenhouse is also used for the Master Gardener™ Fall Training Course for the instruction of starting seeds and other methods of plant propagation.
Varieties of plants raised:
- Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, summer & winter squash and other vegetable starts.
- Basil, parsley, chives, thyme, and other herbs.
- Pelargoniums (geraniums), salvias, petunias, African Daisies, and other flowering bedding plants.
- Drought tolerant flowering plants.
- Other unusual or uncommon bedding plants.
Eastside Greenhouses
The Eastside Greenhouse crew focuses on growing succulents, perennials, shrubs, and trees. With a wide variety of landscaping plants, the Eastside Greenhouse propagates most plants from division or other propagation methods.
Varieties of plants raised:
- Decorative grasses, perennials, and shrubs.
- Oregon native shrubs and trees.
- Specialty conifer trees, deciduous trees, and fruiting trees.
- Cold-hardy succulents, frost-tender succulents, and other houseplants.
